I will come for you at night time

If you grew up in Australia in the 1980s (which I did), you would have been aware of a band called the Hunters And Collectors. They were known for having a raw energy coupled with the ability to write surprisingly sensitive and beautiful music.

If you lived in Australia in the 1980s and 1990s (which I did), you would also have been aware of an irreverent and talented comedy music trio called the Doug Anthony All Stars.

The above video is a live rendition of ‘Throw Your Arms Around Me’, perhaps the most sensual song written by the Hunters And Collectors, performed by the Doug Anthony All Stars for a charity benefit in 2003.

My favourite rendition of one of my favourite songs.

  1. I grew up in Miami in the 80s and 90s listening to British bands! No popular Aussie bands made it my way. None that I can think of, anyway – thanks for sharing. They’re wonderful!

    • Lol, yes, I was going to ask whether you had heard music from some of those bands. Crowded House, in particular, is one of my favourites. You would probably also know Savage Garden? I remember Miami as having a *lot* of energy. I lived in Deerfield Beach for a few months a number of years ago. And yes, British music had a huge influence in Australia, so it’s great to know that people were aware of it as well in the US in the 80s and 90s. What sort of Brit bands were you listening to back then?

      • Savage Garden! Yes, of course.

British rock bands… Def Leppard, Iron Maiden… On the softer rock side… OH boy, that would be a really long list. Duran Duran, Tears for Fears, The Pet Shop Boys, Queen, Spandau Ballet, Culture Club, Eurythmics… Was a HUGE fan of The Police and Genesis. Also loved Wham! I wrote to George many times. Can’t think of why he didn’t reply to my love letters.

Deerfield Beach isn’t too far away. Yes, Miami had lots of energy but a heavy Caribbean music influence that I’m not particularly fond of.
